Amazon Unveils $.99 Fox And ABC TV Show Purchases. Apple Fanboys say wha?
Whoa, this came out of left-field. Amazon just announced that its Video on demand service will be serving up $.99 ABC and Fox rentals just like Apple wait, no, these are $.99 per episode — like you actually own the content rather than just having a short window to watch. Plus, it’s not just limited to one platform as Amazon Video on demand is widely available a bunch of products. This could be huge and might take some sales away from the new Apple TV.

The silly season: No Comment on The iBottleopener
Now I've seen everything. To give lie to the meme that there's an app for that, perhaps a new and upcoming meme will be that there's a case for that.
The iBottleopener (US $19.99) is a case for an iPhone 3G or 3GS that has a bottle opener on the back. The video, that you've probably just seen, sets a new standard for cheesy adverts. The tagline of the ad campaign is "a party in your pocket." At least they didn't use "a party in your pants," which shows that the manufacturers do have a modicum of restraint.
I'm sure that The iBottleopener is the perfect back to school gift for any college student. And iPhone 4 owners won't be left out of the party, or the pants for that matter, since a case to fit the newest iPhone is on its way.
For adding a beery note to your iDevice lifestyle, this case deserves a hearty No Comment.
Thanks Zack (I think) for sending this in.

Burglar alarm in a zippo lighter

[Madmanmoe64] has really done a fantastic job with this burglar alarm built into a zippo. He crammed a picaxe microcontroller, some IR LEDs, an IR sensor, a battery and various switches in there quite well. It almost closes perfectly, something we think he could remedy if it really bugged him that much.
It has several modes, all initiated by a different sequence of button presses. There is the proximity alarm, which sounds when something moves very close. The reverse proximity alarm which sounds when you remove something from its immediate vicinity. A doorbell mode, and a silent alarm mode. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.
Review: Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 and $40 unlimited 3G Broadband2Go plan
Filed under: Internet Tools, Gadling Gear Review

This morning, Virgin Mobile flipped the switch on their new $10 and $40 Broadband2Go plans. We mentioned them earlier this week, but as a quick reminder - for $10, you get 100MB of data, or unlimited data for just $40. These new stand-alone plans make Virgin Mobile the cheapest nationwide 3G operator. Best of all, these new plans are contract free, do not require activation fees or a credit check.
The Broadand2Go service is available on the Novatel MiFi 2200 WiFi 3G hotspot or Ovation MC760 USB modem. The USB modem is like every other on the market - you plug it into an open USB slot, install the software, and get online.
The MiFi 2200 is what deserves some attention. Even though this device is not brand new (we reviewed the Verizon Wireless version last year), the Virgin Mobile MiFi is the only prepaid version available in retail stores.

Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera
Shared by MichaelA brilliant '72 video from the Eames Office begs you to slow down and learn about an iconic instant camera
We had one of those I remember - wonder what happened to it.

A precursor to today's digital era, Polaroid's iconic 1972 SX-70 Land Camera is notable not only for its achievements as the first folding and first SLR instant camera but also for its perfection in form, function, and beauty. The revolutionary camera ignited and defined the instant era, allowing a photographer to focus solely on capturing the moment at hand. One of our favorite sources of inspiration, a pristine example along with its brass-riveted leather case sits on the book shelves at CH HQ. Though we see it every day we were reminded of its importance when our friend Doug Jaeger posted a 1972 video celebrating the camera and its made-in-America pride (a theme that brands like Jeep, Corvette, and Levi's are currently emphasizing in their campaigns).
Partially because the camera's technology was so radical at the time and partially because it came about during an era where people allowed themselves the luxury to understand how things function, the Office of Charles and Ray Eames produced a 10-minute-long video advertisement (more of a documentary, really) about the SX-70, which beautifully captures the camera in all of its glory. What's most surprising (and rewarding) is the pacing and storytelling—something that lacks in today's 30 second sound-bite, ADD, multitasking culture. Though parts of the video may feel slow, you will be completely rewarded for your patience.
As the brilliantly executed video demonstrates, the sleek leather and aluminum SX-70 "helps meet the universal need to do things well." Designed so that the face perfectly fits into the device when looking through the viewfinder, the camera's intelligible exterior conceals a complex internal structure—a system that perfectly illustrates Edwin Land's philosophy to only undertake a project that is manifestly important and "nearly impossible."

The camera's unique optical path (fully explained at 4:13 in the video) is a result of its folding capability. A four element lens collects and then bounces light off a permanent mirror onto a Fresnel surface. The light is bundled, bounced back again and then passed through two astigmatism-correcting slits before hitting an aspheric plastic mirror, creating an image which is then captured through the Fresnel and an elevated taking mirror. Flash bulbs and close up lenses were some of the additional equipment availale for this flexible camera.
The SX-70 film was the first instant film that was self-contained and didn't require timing or peeling. The film developed in a few minutes but continued to set for a few days, allowing photographers of all skill levels to achieve previously unattainable effects by cooling or heating the film during that time.
While the SX-70 (along with all Polaroid cameras) is no longer produced today eBay often has several to choose from, and thanks to the Impossible Project you can still order film for it.
Directory Structure and File Naming Schema : ftp2.nyxdata.com
Dear NYX Data Client:
In April 2010 NYX Data moved to a new ftp server cluster: ftp2.nyxdata.com . As part of this move, changes were made to many of the directory names and file naming conventions that existed as part of the old ftp server cluster.
In order to facilitate client transition from the old directory and file naming conventions we put links in place to point from the old schema to the new. On September 17, 2010 we will completely remove these links.
As a result, clients who still rely on the old directory and naming convention will need to update their scripts and procedures for obtaining files via ftp2.nyxdata.com to conform to the new directory structure and file naming schema.
The following table shows the existing links, their destination, as well as the new file naming convention.

jQuery Mobile – A Web Framework for Smartphones & Tablets
jQuery Mobile is a Touch-Optimized Web Framework for Smartphones & Tablets. It is a unified user interface system across all popular mobile device platforms, built on the rock-solid jQuery and jQuery UI foundation. Its lightweight code is built with progressive enhancement, and has a flexible, easily themeable design.
The aim is to provide tools to build dynamic touch interfaces that will adapt gracefully to a range of device form factors. The system will include both layouts (lists, detail panes, overlays) and a rich set of form controls and UI widgets (toggles, sliders, tabs). jQuery Mobile is now under development for late 2010.

Hang and Level
Shared by MichaelArt hanging made simple with an all-in-one device
good idea but $20??? - easier to make it yourself
Unless you're after a "Beetlejuice" decor scheme, you've probably at one point struggled with hanging a picture on a crooked wall or with awkward tools. Combining a level and marking device in one, the same company that brought you the Stoppy (Under the Roof Decorating) came up with the Hang and Level to take the guesswork out of picture hanging.
Where most hanging tools don't pinpoint the placement of the nail, this one marks the exact spot with just the push of a button, works with all types of hanging hardware and supports decor weighing up to 20 pounds. Once in place, two separate levels align your De Kooning (or what have you) vertically or horizontally. Easy to hold and to use, it makes a commonly frustrating process much more manageable.
Pick it up for $20 from Under the Roof's online store.
Hand Painting Art by Guido Daniele
Guido Daniele was born in Soverato (Italy) and now lives and works in Milan.
